Toronto singer-songwriter James Bruce Moore has spent a lifetime writing and performing songs shaped by country, blues, rock, folk, and the classic singer-songwriter tradition. His music explores love, loss, hope, faith, relationships, and the experiences that shape us over time.
Moore’s connection to music began in childhood, inspired by the country and western records he heard growing up and the early rock and roll of Elvis Presley. By his teens, he was performing in Toronto rock bands. After high school, he moved to London, England, where he joined a blues-rock band, played the London circuit, and recorded at ITV Studios before eventually returning to Toronto.
His first album, Lisbeth (2012), was followed by Soul’s Journey Home (2015), both collections of original songs exploring the many facets of love and life. Moore now returns with six new songs recorded in Brooklyn with Grammy Award–winning producer Dave O’Donnell, continuing his work as a songwriter while bringing a lifetime of experiences and observations to a new collection of music.
"Canadian Sundown" is a deeply personal new song inspired by the events surrounding the 2022 protest in Ottawa, Canada, and the questions that have been raised since then for him about Canada, its history, its future, etc.
The song comes from a place of personal uncertainty rather than political certainty. It describes feeling that some of the history he believed in is being reconsidered or rewritten, and he, as a result, expresses his sense of being lost, concerned, and afraid for the country he loves and which his father fought, and ultimately died, for. The song also pays homage to his late father.
Rather than attempting to tell the listener what to think, Canadian Sundown asks them to consider what happened, what Canada means to them, and how a country can find its way when people no longer seem to agree on its story or direction. Maybe the citizenry of the world outside Canada feels this way too?
The song is a very, very strong patriotic lament. Moore’s patriotism pours from the words, particularly the last section of the song about Canada’s national bird, whose song is heard from “shore to shore.”
Moore does not claim to have all the answers. Instead, Canadian Sundown is the emotional appeal of someone looking at his country and asking: Where are we going? What happened to the Canada I knew? And can we find our way back to one another?
Canadian Sundown is not simply a song about a political event. It’s a song about belonging, memories, identity, and uncertainty in the country which we will ultimately leave to the generations that follow us.
The audience for this song will be anyone and everyone interested in reflecting about Canada, its identity, its culture, its history, and its future. But it’s also for those in the world who are questioning what is going on in their own country. The song is not to promote a political position, but rather to provide my personal, distinct perspective with a timely song that at least invites conversation.
